Frequently Asked Questions
Is training really free?
Yes, completely. All training at NOPO Strength & Conditioning is 100% free of charge. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we never charge athletes or their families for participation.
Our model is built on the belief that access to quality athletic training shouldn't depend on a family's income. We're funded through donations, community partnerships, and grants, which means the cost of coaching is covered by people who believe in this mission, not by the kids we serve.

Why is the program free?
NOPO was founded on the belief that quality coaching and athletic development should be accessible to every young athlete, regardless of financial circumstance. Our programs are made possible through the generous support of donors, sponsors, and the broader community.

Who does NOPO train?
We serve youth and high school athletes in the Portland area, with a primary focus on football and volleyball athletes. Athletes of all experience levels are welcome.
Is this personal training?
No. All training at NOPO is group-based and fully supervised. We do not offer one-on-one personal training or open gym access.

How are youth athletes trained differently than high school athletes?
Youth athletes focus on movement quality, body coordination, and foundational mechanics, building the base they need to train safely and effectively as they grow. High school athletes progress into structured strength, speed, and power development. All programming is intentionally designed to be age-appropriate and athlete-centered.

Is strength training safe for young athletes?
Yes, when properly coached and supervised, strength training is not only safe but highly beneficial for young athletes. At NOPO, technique is always established before any load is introduced, and all sessions are directly supervised by Head Coach Jacob Lusby.

Who coaches the sessions?
All sessions are led by Head Coach Jacob Lusby. There are no unsupervised sessions, substitute coaches, or rotating staff. Athletes and families can expect consistent, qualified leadership every time they walk through our doors.
What are the head coach's qualifications?
Coach Lusby brings over five years of coaching experience to NOPO. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in School Health, is certified in Strength and Conditioning through the ISSA, and holds a Speed and Agility certification through the NSPA.
Do athletes need prior experience?
Not at all. NOPO welcomes athletes at every level, from beginners just getting started to experienced competitors looking to develop their skills further.
Is a waiver required?
Yes. All athletes must have a signed waiver and participation agreement on file before attending any session. No athlete will be permitted to participate without this documentation completed.
Where are you located?
NOPO Strength & Conditioning is based in North Portland, Oregon.
How can parents and guardians support NOPO?
Families are a vital part of our community. You can support NOPO's mission by spreading the word, making a donation through the Support the Mission page on our website. Every contribution, large or small, directly impacts the athletes we serve.
